This is a very pretty folky Grenfell hooked mat of a Canadian goose in flight. Dr. Wilfred Grenfell went to New Foundland in 1892 where he introduced a weaving and  handicraft industry to help the area  woman earn an income to offset the lulls in the fishing industry that most of their husbands were involved in. By 1908 they were producing these hand hooked mats made from old silk stockings cut into strips and dyed. There is a "Grenfell Industries" tag sewn on the back. The goose in flight is a rare seldom seen pattern. The colors are still very bright. There is some loss to the hooking at the very edges of the mat. The mat is 9 x 7"

This is a beautiful early 19th century American needlework sampler wrought by the hand of Nancy Farnsworth at her age of 14 and dated July 16, 1827. It is a very nice sampler in great condition. Its colors are greens, browns, tans and black. There is also a very unusal red bird. There are several lines of the alphabet and a verse surround with a floral border which reads "Youth the spring time of our years, Short the rapid scene appears, Let's improve the fleeting hours, Virtues noblest fruits be ours". I guesss you have to label this an "imcomplete" sampler, the leaves that extend off the floral border were not completed from the left of the top center 2/3 of the way down the felt side. It doesnt take away from this sampler's beauty. It is mounted in an early wooden frame with a very mellow brown patina. It measures 20" by 19".

Offered is this pair of early 19th century American needlework samplers both worked by the hand of Sarah M Tuttle in the year of 1830 when she was 10 years of age. Born in Wolcott, New Haven, CT. The first sampler has several lines of the alphabet and numbers, below that Sarah stitched a house, flowers, trees and a bird. Along with her name and age, there is a short verse which inspite of there not being any losses I can only make out certain words. The colors are very soft browns, greens and tan. There are no losses, repairs or damage (any light or white spots in the photos are the result of the camera). In frame it measures 18 1/2" by 13" and is in an early gilded wooden frame.
The second and larger sampler is a family register of the Tuttle family. Father Lucius and mother Rebekah married in 1802. It lists the births of 10 of their children. There is a very decorative stitched border. No holes damage or repairs. It looks like someone a little later stitched the letter M next to Rebeckah's name (it may have been her wanting to put her middle initial on the sampler). It also is in a old gilded wooden frame.
Having two samplers done by the same girl are rare, in this condition is a wonderful find.

The verse at the bottom reads (as best as I can read it) "Virtue bright ??????? of youth, Sincerity unblushing truth, Thro all life's seasons these will please, In all life's storms secure hearts ease. The colors are very rich greens, browns, yellows, black and blues. In very good condition, no losses or repairs (any white or light spots are from the camera).
